Newsom’s Harris Decision Reshapes the 2028 Democratic Race

California Governor Gavin Newsom says he would stay out of the 2028 race if Kamala Harris runs, exposing a major strategic divide among Democrats.

Gavin Newsom has not announced a presidential campaign, but his latest comments have already changed how Democrats may view the 2028 race. In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, the California governor said he would not seek the Democratic nomination if former Vice President Kamala Harris enters the contest.

“I wouldn’t run if she ran,” Newsom said. His explanation was less about endorsing Harris than avoiding a primary fight that he believes could damage both candidates. He described a potential Newsom-Harris contest as “mutual assured destruction,” arguing that their political bases overlap heavily.

That overlap is important. Newsom and Harris built their political careers in California and both have deep connections to Democratic donors, advisers and activists. A direct primary battle could force those networks to choose sides. Newsom believes Republicans would benefit from that division.

His position also reveals how seriously he views Harris as a potential rival. Harris lost the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump, but she would enter another campaign with national recognition, an established donor network and experience as a former vice president. The Washington Post reports that neither Harris nor Newsom has formally declared a 2028 campaign.

Newsom is also approaching a major political transition. California’s term limits prevent him from seeking another gubernatorial term after 2026, leaving the national stage as one possible next step. He has said that he will consider a presidential campaign, while stressing that his family would have to support the decision.

The most revealing part of his statement is therefore not that Newsom supports Harris. It is that he appears willing to remove himself from the race rather than challenge her directly.

Chiffres clés: 2028, prochaine élection présidentielle américaine. 2 figures démocrates californiennes au centre des spéculations. 2026, année où Newsom quitte la fonction de gouverneur en raison des limites de mandat.

The Democratic field could still include more than a dozen serious contenders, making Harris’s eventual decision one of the factors that could determine where Newsom goes next.
